This course will teach you all of the basics of a good, clear North American English accent. During the program you will learn how to make a positive change to your English pronunciation and intonation, understand your personal accent errors and how to change them, learn and practice, have continuous feedback, practice each change until its accurate and learn exactly how to practice at home with the home study materials provided to maintain and improve your new skills.
AUDIENCE: Anyone who is a speaker of English as a second language and any past participants of ESL programs who need a refresher course for their speaking skills.
Each part of this course will include these elements:
- Explanation and teaching of each key accent element - consonants, vowels, word stress, sentence rhythm and intonation.
- Listening skills practice - through team exercises.
- Speaking skills practice - through team exercises.
- Continuous personal feedback from the instructor, as well as audio or video and computer biofeedback. Computerized biofeedback used in the speech lab is a specialized computer program which allows you to immediately see, hear, and compare your accent to that of a native Canadian speaker.
SKILLS TAUGHT
Once you master the skills taught in this workshop, you will be able to get your message across to your listeners faster, more accurately, and more confidently in business and social situations. You will learn and practice all of the important basic elements of pronunciation, word and sentence rhythm, and intonation, to achieve a clear North American accent. Computerized biofeedback used in the speech lab portion is a specialized computer program which allows you to immediately see, hear, and compare your accent to that of a native Canadian speaker.

- Pronunciation of the CONSONANT sounds of Standard North American English with emphasis on TONGUE AND LIP PLACEMENT.
- Pronunciation of the VOWEL sounds of Standard North American English with emphasis on LISTENING SKILLS.
- Which part of a word do you stress? What is a schwa?
- SPEECH FLOW - How do you speak with flowing sentences? How do you link words together? Learn to use word stress and sentence rhythm for improved speech flow.
- Using INTONATION and EXPRESSION to get your true meaning across more clearly and powerfully, and keep your LISTENER'S ATTENTION.
